Combination Resume Example: Automotive Service Manager

Here's a resume sample for an Automotive Service Manager/Director, which was first written in the functional resume format (see Functional Resume Example: Automotive Service Manager) in the 1990s, which was fine for that decade. Now, functional resumes are not well received by employers, so I converted it to the combination resume format you see below.

About This Combination Resume for an Automotive Service Manager

Before showing you the resume, I'd like to point out a few things I especially like about this resume.

  • Professional title "Automotive Service Manager/Director" is at the top of this executive resume instead of a job objective statement. Randall (not his real name) can use this bold approach because he has earned his title from his long career in the automotive field.
  • Self-employed at the moment, Randall is soon to sell his business. Notice the first job listed in the Relevant Accomplishments sections is Operations Manager for Crafts in Wood. Randall tried his hand at self-employment but didn't make it. So he's selling his business and going back to his old career. He doesn't list "owner" as his job title. Instead, he uses a functional title that relates to his career as a manager.
  • Promotions are listed neatly under his auto dealership employer. This is a concise way to show career growth and success.
  • Skill headings are included within the work chronology. This is what makes this resume a combination resume format. Randall uses those headings to market the skills he enjoys using and wants to use in his next job.
  • No college degree is listed under Education because Randall didn't get a college degree. He lists the program he took because it supports his objective and he wants the employer to know that he got some college education.
  • No dates are listed under Education & Training because Randall doesn't want to show how long ago he went to college. Those old dates could trigger age discrimination, even on an executive resume.

Now, let's look at how these points played out in Randall's resume.
