Here's a functional resume sample for an Academic Librarian with special interest in the Arts and Humanities. It was written in the 1990s, when functional resume formats were more common than they are today. At the time, it made sense to use this format because it addressed the big issue of a woman going back into the workforce after being a full-time mom for 18 years.
Today, the functional resume format is not liked by most employers, so I would not suggest you use one. In fact, I converted this functional resume to a chronological resume (see Chronological Resume Sample: Academic Librarian) to show what it would look like in that format.
About This Functional Resume Sample for an Academic Librarian
I kept this functional resume in our collection because it has a few points you might like to see:
- Highly relevant college degree. Sophia (not her real name) has her MLS degree (Masters in Library Science) which she wanted to highlight. So she placed her Education section near the top of page one.
- Age discrimination. Sophia wanted to avoid disclosing her age so she did not list dates next to her degrees. This is okay because dates under Education are optional.
- Unemployed. At the time the resume was written, Sophia was unemployed. She had been a full-time parent for the last 18 years.
- Unpaid work. Sophia listed lots of relevant unpaid work she had been doing during the 18 years she was an unemployed parent. Because this unpaid work history is near the end of her functional resume, it is downplayed.
