2 Sample Cover Letters: Ask Your Personal Network for Help

We hear a lot about professional networking to find a job. But don't forget about your personal network. Friends and family are sometimes your best resources because they know you and they really care about you.

Here's a job seeker who wants to know what sort of cover letter to use to send a resume to a personal network. So I wrote two sample cover letters for her. Notice they have a personal tone that makes them a little different from a cover letter to a professional network.

How to Ask Friends for Help Finding a Job

Susan,
My husband lost his job three months ago. His friends and family asked that he send them his resume so they could send it to people they know. What kind of cover letter do you use in this case when you don't know what type of job someone might have available for you?
Sandy

2 Sample Cover Letters: Hardcopy and Email

Sandy, this is a very kind offer your friends and family have made. Your husband needs to give them some ideas about what sort of work he would like. He could do that in a short letter or email giving them some pointers about his job search.

Check out these two sample cover letters, and feel free to use all or part of them.

Sample Hardcopy Cover Letter
If the letter is sent as hardcopy, he could write a "form" cover letter with a personal handwritten note at the end. It might look something like this:

Dear Friends and Family,
As you know, I'm looking for a new job in such-and-such field. You have kindly offered to send my resume (enclosed) to people you know who might have job openings. I'm particularly interested in work that focuses on such-and-such. Job titles that match this type of work are A, B, and C.

In today's job market there's nothing like a personal recommendation. I'm very lucky to have a network of friends and family to recommend me to their contacts.

Many thanks,
Your Name

Then in his own handwriting, your husband should add something like this:

Uncle James,
Thank you so much for your help with this. You mentioned you know someone at ABC Company. It would be great if I could get my foot in the door there.

Let's get together next weekend for lunch!

Sample Cover Email
If the letter is sent via email, each one should be personalized something like this:

Dear Uncle James,
As you know, I am looking for a new job in such-and-such field. Thank you for your offer to send my resume (attached) to people you know who might have job openings. I'm particularly interested in work that focuses on such-and-such. Job titles that match this type of work are A, B, and C.
