Resume Cover Letter Sample for Emailing

Ever feel like you're just too darn close to what you're writing to know if it's any good? Sometimes it helps to get someone else to take a look and give you some honest feedback.

In this case, John asked me to look over his resume cover letter before he emailed it to an employer. See what you think...

A Resume Cover Letter Email

John (not his real name) made his resume cover letter anonymous, sent it to me, and agreed to let me critique it here in the Job Lounge. Note, this is a cover letter meant to be sent as an email with a resume attached.

Date

ABC Company
Annon Street
Annon City, State zip

To whom it may concern,

I would like to express my interest in a position as an entry-level property claims field adjuster. I am impressed by the fact that you've been in business since 1925, write 3.8 million policies in 11 states, and that you offer generous employee benefits. I am confident that the Any Insurance team's values as described in your code of conduct, would highly complement my own strengths, objectives, and enthusiasm.

My 30 years of experience in the construction industry gives me significant working knowledge "from the curb" in residential and commercial applications. Having owned and operated my own business and served in various supervisory capacities, I have an abundance of experience in the areas of estimating, sales, customer relations and an enhanced ability to work independently.

My "hands on" experience working with adjusters, contractors, damage control and remediation companies and clients has given me valuable insight into the needs and concerns of each.

The fact that I've recently upgraded my computer skills at our local HI-ED Council and completed the Dale Carnegie Course evidences my ability, desire and commitment to pursue further education in this field.

In short I feel that I am uniquely qualified to train in investigating, evaluating, negotiating and settling claims while becoming a valued member of your claims adjuster team.

Please look over my enclosed resume. I would greatly appreciate an
interview at your earliest convenience and look forward to meeting with you concerning a career at Any Insurance to discuss the positive contributions I could make.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

John Smith

About John's Cover Letter Sample

Thanks for sharing your resume cover letter with us, John. I like your polite tone and the fact that you've spelled things out for the employer.

Here are my thoughts on how you might improve it.

  • There's no need to put the date at the top of the resume cover letter, as that date will be placed in the heading by the email program.
  • You can delete the inside address (the name and address of the employer) because it's not needed in an email cover note.
  • Replace "To whom it may concern" with "Dear Hiring Manager." You may not know the name of the person you're writing to but this change will make your note somewhat personable (so it doesn't sound like a legal notice from a complete stranger).
  • The first sentence can be shortened (see my edit), and the rest of the first paragraph can be removed because most of it should be discussed in the interview, especially the part about money.
  • I suggest you delete the part about "generous employee benefits" as it seems self-serving.
  • Try using bold to highlight the first few words of the three middle paragraphs. This will help make your letter quick to scan.
  • Edit sentences to make them a little less wordy and make the main points clearer.

Okay, here's my revised version of your resume cover note, all to be put in the body of an email message to the employer (with your resume attached).

    • Hello Lakhvir,
Your cover letter sample is very nice. I suggest you have someone go over it closely to iron out a few grammar and sentence structure issues. But I like the tone, especially the first paragraph.
Best to you in your job search.
