If you're a teacher or trainer and you're wondering if you should put a job objective statement on your resume, take this little quiz. It'll help you figure out if it's a good use of your resume real estate, or if you should use one of the alternatives to the objective statement.
A Teacher's Job Objective Quiz
- Are you making a career change? It could be a big career change (for example, your goal is to become a school teacher after having worked in the corporate world for several years). Or, a slight career change (for example, you've been a middle school teacher and now want to teach at the college level). Or, a horizontal career move (for example, you've held management job titles for the last few years and now you want to move into corporate training).
- Are you unemployed right now and have no relevant unpaid work to list on your resume as your current "job title"? For example, while being unemployed for the last year, you volunteered as a fundraiser for a nonprofit. "Fundraiser" is a good "job title" to fill your employment gap because it shows that you were busy and productive. However, it's not a job title that's clearly relevant to your teaching or training goal.
If you answered "No" to both questions, read Should You Put a Career Objective Statement on a Resume?.
If you answered "Yes" to either of these questions, keep reading to see what other teachers and trainers wrote for objective statements on their resumes. Then read How to Write a Job Objective Statement to learn how to write one that's concise and professional.
