Employees are most common in Flagstaff (Arizona), Rome (Georgia), and Great Falls (Montana), and least common in Newark (New Jersey), Edison (New Jersey), and Atlantic City (New Jersey).

Medical coders are paid the most in Waterbury (Connecticut), Iowa City (Iowa), and Vineland (New Jersey), and the least in Shreveport (Louisiana), Laredo (Texas), and Valdosta (Georgia).

Training and Education

Most workers have an associate degree. Approximately 12% of employees have a bachelor's degree. About 51% of medical coders have been to college without getting a degree. About 37% of workers obtain jobs with only a high-school diploma or GED.
